The project is in line with the nation's thrust of rural industrialization and development. It will provide livelihood opportunties and increase income of sustenance fishermen and coastal residents of participating cooperatives.
The production of raw seaweeds and the processing of its product can become a multi million peso industry. Considering the increasing demand for agar colloids which currently are being imported and the availability of abundant raw materials, it is worthwhile to intensify local production and eventually processing locally instead of exporting dried materials.
The expansion of a pilot farm to a 1 ha Seaweed Farm will provide the opportunity for the farmer to upgrade technical knowhow and skills which will contribute to efficiency in production and processing of the product.
Having become a multimillion peso industry, it will provide employment to a wide assortment of workers, adding momentum to the export trade and earning precious dollars for country.
Infused with the proper modern technology, the cultivation and production of seaweeds will help ease poverty afflicting small fishermen and their families, a sector estimated to account for about 6 million of the country's 58 million population today.
Seaweeds becomes a natural habitat for fish, illegal fishing will be minimized due to constant management of planted area; and, preservation of various types of Gracilaria species is assured.
