Mr Arne Andreasson, Programme Director of ALCOM, welcomed the participants. He said the encouraging response to the round-table meeting reflected the participants' interest in it. He noted that two “Fish Forum” meetings had been convened by Agritex in 1986 and 1987. No follow-up forum had resulted.
He said one aim of the round-table meeting was for participants to share information on what research was going on or planned. This would clarify important research areas during the next few years. The exchange of information would also help reveal what resources were available and which institutions could engage in what tasks. Ideas might surface on where and how to find extra resources for research.
