Since 1950, world food production from fish has increased faster than the worlds population, with the result that per caput food supply from fish has almost doubled, increasing from about 7 kg per year in 1950 to about 13 kg in 1993 (Figure 22). With production from traditional capture fisheries incapable of increasing much, a large part of the future growth in fish production for food will depend on aquaculture.
