KWF - 30 Years on

KWF (Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik), a registered society with some 800 active and 100 supporting members, was founded in 1962. It is the Federal Centre of Forest Operations and Techniques and is located in Gross Umstadt in Germany. Its mandate is carried out under five headings:

1. Testing and standardization
2. Operations and system research
3. Forest information centre
4. Men and work
5. Basic and advanced training

Results are made available to practitioners through publications, test reports, leaflets, conferences, seminars and exhibitions. KWF is developing a computer processing data-bank which will be the basis for an efficient, quick and comprehensive guidance for experts in all forest technique questions.

The organization is interested in finding out about the problems which practitioners have in the field and is open to an interchange of ideas to advance practical cooperation. For further information write to:

A. Forbrig, KWF, 6114 Gross-Umstadt, Spremberger Strasse 1, Germany.

News from Czechoslovakia

The State Forest Enterprise for Technical Development are making forest machinery and equipment. Three machines may interest readers. They are:

1. the LS 2 - 500 Cableway (which is a cable system intended for transportation of semi-hung logs and trees from inaccessible places both on sloping and flat ground. It can be driven and transported by a universal wheel tractor with a minimum power of 45 kW).

2. the VNAD clearing-out winch (for use in clearing-out during regeneration felling. Designed for locations with short slopes between roads or low-positioned streams and forest margins, or areas in which accessibility is hampered by obstacles. It consists of a two-drum winch mounted in a boat-shaped steel case. The drums are activated by a 15.5 kW SLAVIA compression engine).

3. the RL 2 - 019 Furrow Planting Machine (designed for planting bare-rooted and soil-covered seedings up to 10 cm in prepared and unprepared areas with stump height up to the tractor ground clearance level).

The above may whet your appetite for more details which, for limitations on space, we have not been able to include in this Bulletin. However, for further information contact:

Frantisek Morávek (Director of Forestry Development Department), Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, Tesnov 17, 117 05 Praha 1, Czechoslovakia.
