ABSTRACT Two years ago on 28 June 2011 during the 37th FAO Conference, a Resolution was adopted declaring Global Freedom from Rinderpest and the Implementation of Follow-up Measures to Maintain World Freedom from Rinderpest. The Resolution recognized this outstanding global achievement which has shown what is possible when nations work together to make the world a safer place. The Resolution also called FAO to use lessons learned from the eradication to prevent and control other devastating transboundary animal diseases like peste des petits ruminants (PPR). FAO, the World Organisation for Animal Health and partners are now formulating a global PPR control strategy. The publication of the proceedings of the events leading to the global declaration serves to commemorate the second anniversary of rinderpest. |
