Ecuador

Vegetation description

Mangroves are widespread along the coast of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Patches of Mora sp. are found behind the mangroves in the north-west, as they are in Colombia. Forests of Dialyanthera sp. with Campnosperma panamensis, Symphonia globulifera and Pterocarpus officinalis, among others, growing in fresh waters. Four important stands of mangroves are found along the Pacific coast from north to south: Ancon Bay on the border with Colombia, Cojimies Bay, Caraquez Bay and the group around the Gulf of Guayaquil reaching as far as Peru and Puno Island, the largest and most intact stand. The species that occur along the coasts are: Acrostichum aureum, Avicennia germinans, Conocarpus erectus, Laguncularia racemosa, Pelliciera rhizophorae, Rhizophora harrisonii and Rhizophora mangle.
