Peru

Vegetation description

The most extended area covered by mangrove forests in Peru is located in Tumbes province, close to Ecuador. In this area the “Santuario Nacional Los Manglares de Tumbes” has been established to protect the ecosystem. This area is now designated as a Ramsar site. The forests in this reserve represent the southernmost limit of mangrove distribution on the Pacific coast of South America. Mangroves are also found along the coast of the mouth of Piurá River, close to the city of Sechura. Among the species present there are Avicennia germinans, Conocarpus erectus, Laguncularia racemosa, Rhizophora harrisonii, and Rhizophora mangle.
