Mayotte

Vegetation description

Mangroves are well developed, due to the shelter provided by the barrier reef which encircles the island. The most important mangrove species in Mayotte is Heritiera littoralis. Heritiera and Erythrina swamps are found in most of the low-lying floodplains of Grande Terre, including: Boueni, Magikavo, Mamoudzou-Kawéni, Longoni and M’Gombani bays. Larger mangrove swamps are found in Acoua and Iloni.
