The FAO Technical Papers are available through the authorized FAO Sales Agents or directly from Sales and Marketing Group, FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy.

This publication addresses the topic of natural forests in tropical dry zones. The document has been long expected by many technicians involved in the management, conservation and sustainable development of forests, on which many people in Africa, Asia and America depend.

In the first part, the document reviews relevant issues, the nature and diversity of these forest formations and the biological, socio-economic and human factors that affect their present evolution. It then introduces the concept of management and the fundamentals and principles underpinning it. An assessment of the tools available is made in the second part, which ends with considerations on prospects, indications and guidelines to help establish best practices. The document also features case studies exploring promising breakthroughs in the subject.
