Book (series)The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024
Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms
2024Six years from 2030, hunger and food insecurity trends are not yet moving in the right direction to end hunger and food insecurity (SDG Target 2.1) by 2030. The indicators of progress towards global nutrition targets similarly show that the world is not on track to eliminate all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). Billions of people still lack access to nutritious, safe and sufficient food. Nevertheless, progress in many countries provides hope of the possibility of getting back on track towards hunger and malnutrition eradication. Implementing the policies, investments and legislation needed to revert the current trends of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition requires proper financing for food security and nutrition. Despite a broad agreement on the urgent need to increase financing for food security and nutrition, the same cannot be said for a common understanding regarding how this financing should be defined and tracked. The report provides a long-awaited definition of financing for food security and nutrition and guidance for its implementation. There are recommendations regarding the efficient use of innovative financing tools and reforms to the food security and nutrition financing architecture. Establishing a common definition of financing for food security and nutrition, and methods for its tracking, measurement and implementation, is an important first step towards sustainably increasing the financing flows needed to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition, and to ensure access to healthy diets for all, today and tomorrow. -

BookletFAO land and water annual overview, 2023 2025
Also available in:
No results found. The FAO land & water annual overview 2023 presents the key achievements of FAO's work on the sustainable and integrated management of land, soil and water resources over the course of 2023.Our planet’s natural resources – land, soil and water – are the backbone of the global food system, yet they face unprecedented pressures. Over 95 percent of the world's food is produced on land, yet one-third of such land is degraded. Ten percent of the global population live in countries with high or critical level of water stress, hindering all efforts towards water and food security. It is our shared responsibility to safeguard these resources and to manage them wisely to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has sustainable access to safe, nutritious and affordable food, preventing the global health crisis from becoming a food crisis. -
BookletLes systèmes alimentaires – Rapport sur le compte à rebours 2023
L'état des systèmes alimentaires dans le monde
2025Also available in:
BookletInsights into the rural livestock farming sector of the Comoros 2025
Also available in:
No results found. The Union of Comoros, hereafter the Comoros, is an Indian Ocean archipelago which faces significant challenges such as limited arable land, vulnerability to climate change, external economic shocks, and natural disasters, making it vulnerable to food insecurity. Despite being a net food importer, agriculture significantly contributes to the gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for 30.6 percent in 2015, with 64 percent of employment in the sector. While 71 percent of food consumed is produced locally, dependence on imports makes the Comoros vulnerable to external shocks like food price fluctuations and trade disruptions. Enhancing the Comoros’ agrifood system and efficiency is essential for improving food and nutrition security and resilience to external shocks. Rural livestock farming in the Comoros is a vital part of the agricultural landscape and plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of many rural households. It provides a significant source of income for rural families and contributes to food security. Most livestock farming in the Comoros is small-scale and subsistence-based, with families raising animals for their own use and selling surplus at local markets. In this context, evidence-based decision-making is essential for shaping effective agricultural policies and guiding the development of the agrifood system. However, a lack of detailed, up-to-date data has so far hindered research and decision-making. FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP/COI/3704) aimed at filling this data gap and this report is the resulting first analysis of the data collected on rural livestock farming in the Comoros. -
