Project objectives:
The use of rootstocks well adapted to dry conditions, could be the most important factor in the improvement of almond growing in the Portuguese regions with Mediterranean climate.
Almond seedlings are known for their resistance to drought but an important variability exists. The aim of this program is to select varieties able to produce seedlings for use as rootstocks. These must be well adapted to nursery technics and have good grafting compatibility, alkalinity tolerance, resistance to soil diseases and induce high yelds.
Project summary:
In order to evaluate the ability of almond seedlings for use as rootstocks in on irrigated almond farming, a selection program of 38 different types, has been carried out.
The progenies includes mainly Portugese varieties, collected in the most important almond growing areas, as well as five from Spain, two from France and one from USA.
Germination rate, vigor, homogeneity, number of branches up to 0,20 m above the soil, root performance, Agrobacteria symptoms and grafting success were observed in nursery.
The scions obtained (grafted with Ferragnes) were planted in an potential almond growing region in order to evaluate the behavior concerning alkalinity, drought, yeld and fruit quality.
