ALUMINIUM CHUTE. - Lightweight chute constructed under the direction of the Forestry Commission. Tests were carried out on an inaccessible site with 300 yds. of aluminium chute on a slope averaging 18°. 100 yds. of wooden chute on a slope of 28° fed timber into top of aluminium chute. Horse drag was used to assemble timber at top of chute. With aluminium chute dry, slope of 18° was not quite sufficient to keep logs running, but with the addition of a little water they ran well. Specifications: composed of 8 ft. long sections using 8 ft. x 2 ft. 6 in. sheets, 914 gauge; weight of one section, 24 lb. Sections are connected by pegs and sockets, so that no loose parts need be carried.

ONE-MAN CIRCULAR SAW. - Saw, which operates from any cutting position, is designed to fell trees, out the limbs, buck the logs, stave bolts or cord wood, and to clear land. Blade is driven by means of a flexible shaft to which is attached a friction band applied by means of pressure on handle at top of saw frame, at the same time feeding saw to timber. Blade rotates at about 300 r. p. m. with power applied at outer edge, producing fast cutting with small power. Specifications: 30 in. blade of 15 gauge; weight of saw, 26 lb.; weight of engine, from 26 to 42 lb. Saw is available with 20 or 30 in. blades and is equipped with 2.2 or 3.6 h.p. air-cooled motor,

AUTOMATIC AIR TONGS. - Tongs are adaptable to inside or outside dipper sticks of any make or size shovel. Three steel clamps on the lower inside of each tong give a position grip on the log. Equipment for tongs is a 30 cu. ft. compressor producing 100-150 lb. air pressure 20 X 48 in. air tank is usually installed with piping to locate control valve handy to the operator. If dipper sticks are hollow, pipe is in. stalled through them and connected to hose which runs to operating valve at one end and to a 2-way air cylinder, mounted on the tongs. The extension or adapter is easily mounted on dipper sticks. It can easily be removed to replace dipper on sticks for excavation work. It varies in length from 4 ft. to 6 ft. depending on size of shovel.
