Information compilation and dissemination

The Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) of FAO is entrusted with providing objective, timely and comprehensive information on regional and global livestock sector trends to national governments and the international community. This information is required to support evidence-based livestock policy decision making at various levels to successfully manage the social, environmental, health and ethical conflicts ensuing from the rapid expansion and transformation of global livestock production.

The Division maintains an information and knowledge system on global animal agriculture based on systematic compilation of relevant information provided by Member countries, complemented by commissioned studies to fill important information gaps. Furthermore, AGA maintains networks of expertise in various domains of livestock production and sector development.

Information is made available through web-based information systems such as the Global Livestock Production and Health Atlas (GLiPHA), an interactive electronic atlas providing a scaleable overview of national and sub-national information, the Gridded Livestock of the World, presenting data in terms of livestock and production density maps, the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS), covering the status of farm animal genetic resources, the PAAT Information System, dealing with tsetse and trypanosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as through different series of electronic and hard copy publications.

AGA raises awareness about public goods affected by livestock production through participation in relevant meetings, organization of consultations, press releases and information dissemination through the media.
