Poultry manure: safe food for livestock?

Interview with Andrew Speedy
Senior Officer Feed Resources, FAO

In many countries worldwide, the use of poultry manure or litter is a useful feed source for other livestock, particularly cattle. Mixed with other foodstuffs, this poultry by-product is a cheap alternative, especially for smallholder farmers.

However, like any manure, it is a potentially dangerous material and needs to be treated under the right conditions to make it safe. With proper treatment, there is no reason why farmers should not make use of these valuable by-products but FAO is advising caution for those countries currently affected by the Avian Influenza epidemic in Asia.

In this interview Andrew Speedy, Senior Officer for the Feed Resources Group gives the latest advice on using poultry manure and other poultry by-products.
