The project objective is to improve the welfare of resource-poor livestock owners and low-income consumers through improved supply and marketing of safe, better quality milk and dairy products with emphasis on street milk and dairy products.
The project focuses on the informal and small-scale sectors which currently hold the largest share (up to 95%) of the market in the participating countries.
Project activities are participatory, facilitated by the national governments, driven by stakeholders (public and private) and guided by an Inter-regional Dairy Task Force composed of national representatives of the responsible dairy development authorities from each participating country.
An integrated dairy chain approach is being used to ensure that improvement of milk and dairy product quality and safety are effected in production, collection, processing and marketing.
Stepwise improvement of national standards is promoted to facilitate uptake of improved practices and standards in the informal dairy sector.
Stakeholders identified activities focus on three key thematic areas:
- technology exchange, adaptation and transfer
- training
- awareness raising and building a sustainable information platform
