IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GLOBAL PLAN OF ACTION FOR CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE

Country Report of Qatar

Qatar is considered as one of the richest area in plant genetic resources in the Gulf region because of the desert climate variations and plant types. In response or the global awareness of importance of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the government of Qatar initiated a number, of committees, departments and issued bylaws aiming towards conservation and sustainable use of these resources for food and agriculture. The main objective of these organs is to set a plan of action foe. conservation and sustainable use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture according to the following activities:

  • Establishment of scientific Groups and recognized bodies for:

  • Surveying and inventorying plant genetic resources available for food and agriculture.

  • Promote activities for collection of these resources and available information regarding plant resources especially endangered species or species of potential use for food and agriculture.

  • Exchange of information about plant genetic. Resources for
    better utilization.

  • Supporting on-farm management and improvement of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

  • Developing defined programmes to assist farmers in disaster situations to restore agricultural systems.

  • Promote in situ conservation of wild crop relatives and wild plants for food production.

  • In accordance with national regulations and global consensus the government will strengthen collaboration in:

  • Promotion and implementation of instruments to sustain
    ex situ collection.

  • Supporting programmes for regeneration of threatened
    ex situ collection.

  • Developing strategies for planned recording of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

  • Adopting agricultural policies to promote sustainable agriculture through crop diversification.

  • Strengthen research programmes to promote commercialization of under utilized plants.

  • To promote breeders and breeding programmes in connection to variety development and support seed production and distribution avenues.

  • Develop new markets for local varieties and diversity-rich products.

  • To develop monitoring and early warning systems for loss of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

  • To promote public awareness of the value of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture conservation an use.
