INDUSTRIAL CROPS
AGPC's industrial crops programme develops strategies for the introduction and management of a range of industrial crops (including oilseeds, gums and resins, sweeteners, beverages, food additives, fibres, medicinal and aromatic plants). It assesses the potential of under-utilized crops and wild harvested plants for specific regions and agro-ecozones, particularly marginal areas. Key activities include:
Dissemination of information on new industrial crops and crop production technology
Support for creation and maintenance of national networks and information systems on industrial crops, including sesame and safflower, sunflower, cotton and other fibres
Development of multidisciplinary crop information within EcoPort, the ecology knowledge processor
Collaboration in development of Ecocrop, which enables users to identify a suitable crop for a specified environment
Support for workshops and conferences on medicinal/aromatic plants and multi-purpose sweet sorghum, and international trials of new safflower cultivars
Projects for technology transfer and pilot testing of innovative crop cultivars
