Large support for Sustainable Livestock

Neil Fraser appointed as chair of the Global Agenda of Action in Support of Livestock Sector Sustainable Development

More than 30 sector stakeholder organizations, including FAO, have signed the Global Agenda of Action Consensus agreeing to work together to ensure the sustainability of the sector’s growth.
Signatories represent a vast array of different interests and perspectives with representatives from  governments, the private sector, producers, civil society, academia, and inter-governmental organizations (Partners list). FAO is one of the signatories and acts as the Support Group of the partnership.
The purpose of the Partnership is to catalyze and guide the continuous improvement of livestock sector practices towards the more efficient use of natural resources.

Constitution of Focus Area Groups
Partners have agreed to focus on three areas where improving practices can potentially bring important benefits for food security, livelihoods and the environment. Focus area groups  to implement the work programmes were constituted in May.
The purpose of the first focus area is to reduce the gap between producers with efficient production practices and producers who can improve their efficiency through the use of existing knowledge,  technologies and practices.
The second focus area aims to restore value to grassland through changes in the management of grazing land that enhance ecosystem services, productivity and livelihoods
The third  area focuses on manure management. Its purpose is to reduce nutrient overload and greenhouse gas emissions through the recovery and recycling of nutrients and energy contained in manure.

Constitution of the Guiding Group
The Guiding group which provides overall guidance and coordination was constituted at the beginning of June 2013. Its members have appointed Neil Fraser, Principal Adviser, International Policy, in the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries as their first Chair. He brings with him extensive experience of domestic and international agricultural policy, acquired over the last 40 years.

The Guiding Group will hold its first meeting on 17 and 18 June 2013 in Rome.
