Acknowledgements

This Guide to Woodfuel Surveys has been compiled by the Forest Products Division and Marketing Branch (FOPH) of FAO.

It was drafted by Teresita Arias Chalico, biologist at the Universidad Autónoma de México, and Enrique Riegelhaupt, agronomist at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, under the supervision and with the personal advice and support of Miguel Angel Trossero, Senior Forestry Officer (Wood and Non-wood Products Utilization Branch) of FAO’s Forestry Department.

Many other persons provided extensive contributions, assistance and personal insights for the finalization of the document, with a special mention to Marco Perri (FOPW) who helped with the definitive edition, corrected the proofs and formatted the final document, and to Rudi Drigo (FOPH), Johan Lejeune and Thorong So (FONS) who contributed with their technical comments to the various drafts prepared during the course of the year of work.

Sincere thanks also go to Mr. A. Thiam for his help in getting the document started - an important stage in the process culminating in this final version of the guide.

Several points of detail were refined on the basis of comments received from participants at the Workshop on Woodfuel Information held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 26 to 28 November 2001 and the Expert Consultation on Unified Wood Energy Terminology held in Rome, Italy, on 3 and 4 October 2001.

Sincere gratitude is also expressed to the European Commission for its financial support to the wood energy component of the project on information and analysis for sustained forest management, an integrated national and international effort involving thirteen tropical countries of Latin America (GCP/RLA/133/EC and GCP/RAF/354/EC).
