The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade had its origin at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, meeting near the end of World War II, where three institutions were proposed: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and an International Trade Office (ITO). The World Bank and the IMF resulted and have become immensely powerful institutions. The ITO, however, was never created. In its place, the world's leading nations agreed to a set of trading rules (GATT), which have governed world trade since the late 1940s.

WTO. World Trade Organization. The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established in 1995 to enforce the international trade rules established by GATT.
