ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The authors wish to express their thanks to all IBAMA technicians who, directly or indirectly, have contributed to the conception, elaboration and establishment of SISPROF in the Brazilian Amazon.

In particular, the authors would like to express their appreciation to forest engineer José de Arimatéa Silva, who took the first steps in conceiving and delineating SISPROF back in 1997, when he was head of the then Forest Department of the Directorate of Forests of IBAMA.

Special thanks also go to engineers Maria da Graça Rebelo Gama and Sônia de Azevedo Dantas for their work in the development team of the SISPROF data bank and for their invaluable contribution to the current work.

The authors are also grateful to the group of technicians that have worked in the system’s development, in the persons of Mario Pucci and Marcelo Lara, for their contribution during the preparation of this work.

In addition, the authors express their recognition of the work of the other SISPROF teams, especially to Nilson Clementino Ferreira for the development of geo-referencing (at the Remote Sensoring Center of IBAMA) and to Randolf Zachow, Antonio Tolentino Piau and Maria Cristina Felfilli of the development team for the data validation component of SISPROF.
