Cover photograph. Only the Hindu temple gives any indication that these forests lie in the Himalayas of India. If modern working techniques and equipment were applied, such forests might be managed and used just as well as forests in the European Alps. The United Nations Special Fund for Economic Development has recently approved a project to evaluate selected forest areas in India and plan their utilization. FAO will execute this project. A considerable amount of data is already available from earlier investigations carried out under bilateral and multilateral aid programs.
