Minorities living in remote mountainous regions of Viet Nam are considered particularly vulnerable. They are geographically isolated and live in areas where productivity is limited by erosion, environmental degradation, forest fires and other natural disasters.
Because of their isolation, these mountain people are
also cut off from knowledge of more advanced technologies
and end up working with very limited tools and techniques.
Not surprisingly, they have difficulty producing adequate
food to meet their needs and frequently must depend on
government support programmes. Their high birth rate is also
putting increasing pressure on their limited resources and
fragile environment.
