|
The TeleFood and World Food Day 2000 message "A Millennium Free from Hunger" was broadcast through television and radio programmes around the world
Here are a few examples of the events that took place in 2000:
- In Spain, celebrities Francisco and José Luis Perales and the Italian singer Laura Pausini participated in a prime time fundraising show on Radio Televisión Española (RTVE). The show was also broadcast on RTVEs website and rebroadcast to Latin-America.
- The Italian network RaiDue broadcast a fundraising show live from Parma. And RaiUno broadcast a daily appeal in support of TeleFood, which culminated in a three-hour prime time television fund-raising event on 26 December.
- Arab News Network (ANN) dedicated a two-hour live broadcast to TeleFood. During October, Arab Radio and Television (ART) aired four weekly broadcasts targeting youth, culminating in a special programme spotlighting TeleFood-funded projects.
- A three-hour celebrity-studded television show was broadcast live from The State of Bahrain via satellite to the Arab-speaking world in November. This was Bahrains first celebration of World Food Day and TeleFood
- In Japan Fuji TV broadcast a classical music concert with the Tohogakuen Orchestra conducted by the famous Maestro Myun-Wung Chung.
- Tanzanian television broadcast several succesful TeleFood events featuring many celebrities, including South African singer Brenda Fassie
- In addition to live broadcasts, a number of other television stations -- from BBC World to NHK in Japan to Ecuador's main TV channels -- dedicated a series of programmes to food security issues.
Many other activities also took place -- including children forming a human solidarity chain against hunger in Nicaragua, a fund-raising dinner in Chad and a question-and-answer programme on nutrition in Vietnam.
The generous and enthusiastic support from a wide variety of TeleFood partners -- private companies and institutions, governments and non-governmental organizations, radio and television broadcasters -- was instrumental in spreading the TeleFood 2000 message.
