The Division has also compiled data collected in the agriculture censuses conducted in 80 countries (Statistical Development Series no. 9) during the period 1986 to 1995. Among other details, countries were asked to compile data on holders, farm population and employment by gender. The Division provides guidelines (for details please refer to list of documents) for collection of data to the member countries.
Realising the importance of gender related issues in the process of sustainable agricultural development and the difficulties encountered in the availability and analysis of the data for use of policy makers, the Statistics Division is planning to approach the problem in a more comprehensive manner.
So far the focus of the Division's programme has been on the data derived from agricultural censuses and surveys. While these provide an overview of the structure of gender involvement in the agricultural activity, they do not suffice for providing guidance to policy makers to draft programs for agricultural and rural development. Therefore, in the new approach, it is planned to compile data from all sources (agricultural censuses and surveys as well as household income/expenditure surveys) to understand the role of women in the social, cultural and economic development and their impact on income, consumption, nutritional status etc. Thus, in addition to the traditional focus on the collection and compilation of data on status of holder, employment and population dependent on agriculture by gender, the new approach would attempt cross classifications of the attributes by size of holding, income classes etc. as well as establish linkages with income and consumption levels. In this context it would be necessary to improve the existing concepts for collection of data as well as framing new methods to assess gender contribution in the generation of income. It is also proposed to encourage member countries to re-tabulate existing data from censuses and surveys and to demonstrate their utility in decision making.
These statistics have been automatically derived from the FAOSTAT database and are under review. The following maps are examples of what will be available soon.
