GOFC-GOLD Chairman wins 2005 Advancing Global Land Remote
Sensing Award
Dr. John Townshend, Chair of GOFC-GOLD,
is a recipient of the prestigious 2005 William T. Pecora
award for "Outstanding Leadership in Advancing Global
Land Remote Sensing." This major award is presented
annually to recognize outstanding contributions by individuals
or groups towards understanding the Earth by means of
remote sensing. The award was presented to Dr. Townshend
on October 26, 2005, at the 16th annual William T. Pecora
Memorial Symposium held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Regional GOFC-GOLD Workshop on Observations of Land Cover and Needs of Research Projects in Northern Eurasia, 18-19 June 2005, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The GOFC-GOLD Northern Eurasia Regional Information Network (NERIN) and Land Cover Implementation Team held a 2 day workshop to 1) introduce new large-scale research projects in the region and 2) discuss land cover harmonization and validation with a focus on the FAO Land Cover Classification System (LCCS-2).

Development
of an International Wildland Fire Accord
The
GOFC-GOLD Fire Implementation Team, jointly with the Wildland
Fire Advisory Group of the United Nations International
Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) and the UN-ISDR
Global Wildland Fire Network has actively contributed
to the development of the strategic framework for the
development of an international wildland fire accord,
which will be discussed at two high level meetings on
Forestry in March.
FAO
will hold the Ministerial Meeting on Forests on 14 March
and the seventeenth session of the Committee on Forestry
(COFO) from 15 to 19 March, both at Rome.
One of the main agenda items tabled for the Ministerial
Meeting on Forests is international cooperation on forest
fires. The ministers at the meeting will discuss opportunities
for cooperation at local, regional and international levels
to address forest fires at the root cause.
The COFO Meeting will address the international commitment
to sustainable forest management. It will discuss specific
ways that forests contribute to the achievement of the
Millennium Development Goals with emphasis on practical
implementation on the ground.
