Appointment
of new GOFC-GOLD Chair
Dr.
Anthony C. Janetos has been appointed Chair of the Global
Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD),
which is a panel of the UN-sponsored Global Terrestrial
Observing System (GTOS).
Dr.
Janetos is Director of the Joint Global Change Research
Institute at College Park, Maryland, which investigates
the scientific, technological, economic and policy implications
of climate change. He has served on several national and
international study teams, including working as a co-chair
of the U.S. National Assessment of the Potential Consequences
of Climate Variability and Change. He also was an author
of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Special
Report on Land-Use Change and Forestry, the Global Biodiversity
Assessment, a coordinating lead author in the recently
published Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and most recently
a lead author in Working Group II of the IPCC. Of note,
Dr. Janetos was substantially involved during the initiation
of GOFC-GOLD in the late 1990s.
As
the new Chair of GOFC-GOLD, Dr. Janetos takes over from
Dr. John Townshend, who led the panel from 2000 to 2006.
Dr. Townshend remains an active member of the GOFC-GOLD
