Group on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)
The GOFC-GOLD REDD working group was initiated in 2005 in response to
discussions in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) regarding Reduced Emissions from Tropical Deforestation and Forest
Degradation (REDD). The working group provides an independent expert forum
for international cooperation and communication to formulate scientific
consensus and provide technical input to UNFCCC discussions and implementation
activities.
The working group organizes REDD expert workshops, contributes to related
UNFCCC/Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) side
events and Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) submissions, and is
engaged in REDD demonstration activities. The working group has developed
the “Sourcebook of Methods and Procedures for Monitoring, Measuring and
Reporting on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation and
Degradation in Developing Countries”. The Sourcebook provides explanation,
clarification, and methodologies to support REDD early actions. It compliments
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) good practice guidelines
for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF).
The working group is assessing monitoring capacities and is helping countries
to develop REDD relevant national monitoring systems. Technical progress and
innovative observation technologies are regularly synthesized to support
operational use in national forest monitoring.
The REDD working group is coordinated by the GOFC-GOLD Land Cover project office
located in The Netherlands.
