TOPC meeting, Ispra, Italy, 25-27 June 2002

Introduction

The Terrestrial Observing Panel for Climate (TOPC) is a group of scientists with expertise in climate change issues. The TOPC supports the work of the Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) which jointly carry out activities aimed at improving the understanding of climate change processes in terrestrial systems and potential impacts on mankind. The sixth session meeting of the TOPC panel will be held from 25-27 June 2002 at the Joint Resource Centre in Ispra, Italy.

TOPC and GCOS is preparing the 2nd report on the Adequacy of the Global Climate Observing Systems for the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC.

The 2nd Adequacy Report is an important opportunity for our community to place its concerns, priorities and solutions for terrestrial observations before the Parties to the UNFCCC and to seek support for the long-term observations that are needed. Whilst not adopting the full Intergovernmental process of the IPCC Assessments, the report will adhere to the overall philosophy and will be prepared in close consultation with the IPCC and the wider science community.
