President Carlos Menem of Argentina visits FAO   President Carlos Menem of Argentina (right) shakes hands with FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf Argentina's president of eight years, Carlos Menem, visited FAO on 2 December 1997. He was received by the Director-General, Jacques Diouf, and delivered a speech in which he talked of his country's progress in the field of agricultural development and its eradication of the livestock plague foot and mouth disease. The Director-General also spoke, stressing the importance of Argentina's integration with other countries in the Latin America region. Argentina was a founding member of Mercosur - the Southern Common Market - in 1991. Dr Diouf also mentioned the importance of the eradication of foot and mouth disease, which has reopened the country's meat markets, and praised the diversification of agricultural production into non-traditional sectors with high export potential.
