For nearly 20 years, aquaculture has been the fastest growing food producing sector in the world, increasing from 1.45 kg per caput in 1984 to 4.9 kg in 1997. Today, aquaculture production accounts for almost a third of total world fish production. Since 1984, aquaculture production in developing countries has been growing more than five times as fast as in developed countries.
