Aquaculture is emerging as a major source of food and income, thus making it a significant contributor to food security. Fish provides 17 percent of the world's animal protein. In some countries the figure is as high as 50 percent. Especially in developing countries, where average food intake is low, fish is an important source of nourishment in coastal areas and among the poor. |
