The fight against desertification is political, economic, social and technological. One effective way of reducing pressure on land is to support income diversification in rural areas. Pastoralists, for instance, whose growing herds can devastate vegetation, should be supported in seeking other sources of food and income, such as crop cultivation and agroforestry.
