Educating young people

Attending class in Honduras
FAO/18920/G. Bizzarri

Around 15 percent of the world's youth population, more than 153 million young men and women, remain illiterate. Of those, 57 million are male, but 96 million are female. In 40 countries, less than 25 percent of girls go to secondary school. There is a clear correlation between a young woman's education and later reproductive health. For young women, just four years of education have been shown to correspond to a 30 percent decrease in childbirths and to a 50 percent decrease in infant mortality rates.
