Farmers queuing for seed in the aftermath of civil war
in Rwanda |
War and civil strife have resulted in emergencies in many countries, spreading undernourishment and even starvation throughout civilian populations. Currently, 15 countries designated as suffering from complex emergencies are receiving United Nations assistance. The long-simmering conflict that boiled over in Kosovo in the spring of 1999 created enormous human suffering. In Angola, renewed fighting has driven nearly 2 million people from their homes. Refugees and others displaced by civil conflict in Guatemala are returning to areas they had been forced to abandon and have found their houses destroyed and their land occupied. |
