International Consultation on Tropical Fruits

The first intergovernmental meeting on tropical fruit in Kuala Lumpur (15 - 19 July) was attended by Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Honduras, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, Viet Nam and Zimbabwe.

 

 

 

  • In 1995, 42 million tonnes (mts) of tropical fruit was grown worldwide. Of this, 1.5 mts worth US$1.3 billion was exported (bananas excluded from these statistics).
     
  • Main fruits traded included pineapples, avocados, mangos, passion fruit, papayas, guavas, litchis, limes, mangosteen, durian, star-fruit and rambutan.
     
  • Developed world imports of the so-called big four -- pineapples, avocados, mangos and papayas -- averaged 979,000 tonnes annually over the period 1990-1993.
