Brazilian star Caetano Veloso, American
singer Jackson Browne and the Cuban band Los Van
Van are among the dozens of internationally
renowned musicians scheduled to perform at the
second annual World Food Day Concert on Sunday, 26
October.
The free, open-air concert will take place
simultaneously on stages in Rome and Havana, linked
by satellite and television into a single, global
event. The concert caps more than a week of
activities dedicated to raising public awareness
and support for the campaign to end the chronic
hunger and undernutrition that afflicts more than
800 million men, women and children.
A week earlier, on 19 October, TeleFood '97 took
to the airwaves, reaching an estimated 100 million
viewers in some 60 countries with a message of
solidarity. Part of World Food Day celebrations,
eight hours of broadcasting were brought to a
glittering close with a gala concert in the
Vatican, with invited guests.
Parts of the World Food Day Concert in Rome,
which starts at 18:00 local time, will be shown
live on a giant screen at the Havana venue and vice
versa. In Rome, acts such as Caetano Veloso,
Daniele Silvestri, Taakoma, Avion Travel, Nada Trio
and Jackson Browne are billed to play, while Irene
Grandi, Augusto Enriquez, Los Van Van and Amauri
Perez are among those expected to perform in
Havana.
A number of music and dance workshops are being
held on FAO premises in the days before the
concert.
