Prizewinning francophone journalists put food security in the headlines

Three francophone African journalists were honoured at an awards ceremony, held at FAO headquarters on Monday 2 June, for their contributions to the discussion of food security. The competition was organized last November by FAO and Radio France Internationale on the occasion of the World Food Summit.

Accepting their awards (from left to right): Mr Mamadou Barry, Mr Souleymane Ouattara and Mr Bethuel Kasamwa-Tuseko.

Bethuel Kasamwa-Tuseko, a correspondent for the press agency SYFIA in the Democratic Republic of Congo, won first prize for his article "Zäire: la terre ou l'enfer" ("Zaire: land or hell"). The article describes the way in which leaders of all the country's religious communities - Catholic, Protestant and Muslim - encourage their followers to farm the land. Mr Kasamwa-Tuseko received the sum of 10 000 French Francs as well as his trip to FAO headquarters in Rome.

The other two prizewinners were Souleymane Ouattara, chief of the Southern Sahel SYFIA office in Burkina Faso, and Alpha Mamadou Barry from the Journal du Soir, also from Burkina Faso. Their visit to Rome was paid for by FAO's Technical Cooperation Department. Mr Outtara's article - "Gestion des cereales: mettre sa récolte en boîte pour mieux la gérer" ("Cereal management: storing your harvest tomanage it better") - focused on the need to know how best to manage harvests, recycle products and avoid wastage. Mr Barry's article - "Production laitière: le bon exemple de Harouna Dicko à Djibo" ("Dairy production: Harouna Dicko's good example in Djibo") - emphasized the inadequacy of dairy production in Burkina Faso and looked at the determined actions of a number of farmers to solve the problem.

The journalists were congratulated on the quality of their work by Mr Sidaty Aidara, Chief of the FAO Information Department's Unit for Liaison with National Committees, in his address to those gathered for the ceremony. Mr Aidara also thanked the French Ministry for Cooperation, which provided financial support to the competition.
