The Regional Office for Latin America
and the Caribbean has pinpointed the importance of the reform process
of the State and institutionality modernization intending to strengthen
sectoral public management. Under this point of view, FAO has carried
out various studies on public expenditure towards rural areas since
2001 to date.
The main purpose of this work has been to analyze the level and
composition of expenditures made by the different governments of
the Region addressing agricultural and rural sector development.
This work has also permitted the identification of the main instruments
by which resources are assigned to create the framework of standards,
conditions and incentives for sectoral development, and complementarily
provide rural areas with infrastructure and public assets.
Currently, FAO counts with a database which summarizes public expenditure
for rural areas between 1985 and 2001 for 20 countries of the Region.
