Livestock Policies

The mission of the Animal Health and Production Division is to coordinate the Regional FAO Livestock Commissions created by agreement between FAO and Member Countries and International Agencies, being established by the FAO Council, according to the Constitution of the Organization.

The Commission on Livestock Development for Latin America and the Caribbean (CODEGALAC) was established taking into consideration the existing constraints in livestock development in Latin America and the Caribbean and at the request of member countries in the 1987 FAO Council meeting.

CODEGALAC is above all a forum to promote cooperation between member countries and coordinate efforts in the preparation of policies and coordinated formulation and execution of an active national and regional program for livestock development.

FAO takes part also in different associations or international agencies groupings in Latin America , among which is the Inter-American Cooperation Group on Animal Health (GICSA), a complementing and cooperation mechanism in animal health. Of an hemispheric nature and formed by International Agencies which carry out their activities in the American Continent.

GICSA was created in 1984 at the request and initiative of the United States of America and supported by various member countries, as a mechanism to promote and facilitate the coordination between Member Agencies and bilateral for technical cooperation in animal health among countries of the American Continent.
