Poverty Reduction

FAO launched an initiative to assist in the formulation and execution of policies that will produce positive changes in the livelihoods of a great number of poor people worldwide. The initiative contributes to reduce poverty through the formulation of national and international sectoral policies that will guarantee an equitable, safe and clean livestock production.

The initiative is based in the fact that projects addressing technology in the livestock and associated sectors have not achieved important improvements for the livelihoods of the poor and that it is essential to propose an institutional and political body to increase the impact and sustainability of the actions in favor of the poor.

This activity is sponsored by the Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch, at Headquarters in Rome with regional centers in Southern Asia , South-East Asia , the Horn of Africa, West Africa and Andean Region. This mechanism is financed by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, with the responsibility of guiding and coordinating the related regional activities and turn into a reference point for the development of livestock policies in favor of the poor.

In the American Continent the regional institution selected to develop and establish a regional center is the Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDENSAN).
