Codex Alimentarius

Create and/or strengthen the Codex National Committees and technical subcommittees of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, ensuring the exercise of their counseling functions to the respective Governments in issues related to food safety based in the recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the requirements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements on Sanitary and Phitosanitary Measures (SPM) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT). Facilitate the process of harmonization or equivalence of domestic standards with those of Codex, in the countries of the Andean Region.

Results:

  • Better understanding on the part of national professionals of the government, industry, consumers and universities of the importance of CODEX work and the role of the Codex National Committee.
  • Creation or strengthening of the organization/functioning of the Codex National Committee and technical subcommittees
  • Prepare a Plan of Action per country to strengthen the Focal Points, Codex National Committees and the Technical Sub-Committees both institutionally and technical-administratively.
  • A Plan of Action per country to update domestic food standards, specially priority products and issues in relation to Codex Alimentarius Standards.
  • A proposal of strategies and actions per country to improve the situation of additives, contaminants, pesticide and veterinary drugs residues in food and to update the food import/export inspection and certification systems
  • A Web site of the Codex National Committee established and in operation for the dissemination of activities and facilitate communication and work among its members.
  • Instruction of 50 trainers and training of 600 professionals in the following issues
    • Domestic food standards and harmonization with Codex standards.
    • Risk analysis in food control.
    • Application of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) System
    • Codex criteria on the establishment of maximum limits for additives, contaminants and pesticide and veterinary drugs residues in food.
    • Codex Guidelines on formulation, evaluation and accreditation of Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification systems
    • Application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
