Raising frequency of the wind throw disasters in spruce stands in the Central European region was one of the main reasons for local or even large-scale spruce decline in affected areas. Damages caused by abiotic factors created sufficient conditions for increasing of the bark beetles population followed by the infestation. The dynamics of insect outbreaks were exceptionally strong and intensive. The largest wind throw disasters affected Slovakia in 1996 and in 2004. Both protected as well as commercial forests were affected. Several policy options on the ways of how to manage the affected areas linked to the level of nature and landscape conservation were widely discussed in the public for last 5 years.
The workshop evaluated the development of storm damage management in Slovakia since the last large-scale windstorm in 2004. International experts and international organizations took part in the event to share their experiences on storm damage management in other countries.
