Improving research & strengthening human capital

The Research, Extension and Training Division collects, analyses and disseminates information to FAO member countries in its field of competence. It provides central coordination in the effective application of new developments in research, technology, education, extension and communication. It also facilitates and promotes the generation of knowledge and technology transfer. Particular attention is given to environmental information management of natural resources.

SDR comprises the following units:

  • Secretariat to the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to the CGIAR
  • Extension, Education and Communication Service
  • Environment and Natural Resources Service
  • Research and Technology Development Service

The TAC Secretariat provides technical and administrative support to the Technical Advisory Committee Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). TAC plays a central role in the activities of the CGIAR by providing it with intellectural leadership on scientific matters as well as ensuring the quality and relevance of the International Agricultural Research Centres' research to CGIAR's goals by recommending research priorities and strategies and evalutating their implementation and impact.

The Extension, Education and Communication Service helps upgrade national agricultural education, extension and training programmes and and institutions. Through participatory and cost-effective approaches, it also promotes the sharing of knowledge and technology with specific rural groups, including resource-poor farmers, rural women and youth. It also strengthens national capacity in communication for sustainable development and promotes the use of appropriate media and technologies for participation and training.

The Research and Technology Development Service assists developing countries in building and strengthening their capacity for research and technology development, assessment and transfer in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and natural resources management leading to improved sustainable production systems. It also has organization-wide responsibility for coordinating research and technology development activities within FAO.

The Environment and Natural Resources Service helps developing countries use remote sensing, agrometeorology and geographic information systems to monitor and manage natural resources. It promotes a cross-sectoral approach to the policy, planning and management of activities related to sustainable development, environment and energy. It also provides support to the international conventions on biodiversity, desertification and climate change.
