People - Population
Population ageing and rural development: a view from the Population and Development Service of FAO
Policy-makers need to be alerted to the opportunities and challenges brought about by rural ageing. Development strategies can only succeed if they take advantage of the resource that older people represent and if they provide the elderly with adequate support.

The elderly, HIV/AIDS and sustainable rural development
In high prevalence countries, HIV/AIDS can significantly modify the shape of the population pyramid in ways which developing countries have never experienced. The impacts of this new and brutal aging of populations of developing countries is addressed in this paper.

Rural population ageing in poorer countries: possible implications for rural development
The Population service publishes another paper in its series on ageing. The paper examines the changes occurring to levels of urban and rural ageing in developing countries and what challenges the current situation poses to agricultural and development policies in these countries.

Ageing of rural populations in South-East and East Asia
1999 is the UN International Year of Older Persons. As part of FAO's contribution to this year, it was deemed of interest to focus on the ageing of rural populations in a region where this process was rapidly advancing. This paper demonstrates the linkages between rural ageing fuelled by fertility decline, rural-urban migration and agricultural development in selected countries in East and South E... more

Rural dimensions of gender-population concerns
This paper argues for a holistic approach to sustainable development through integrating rural concerns into overall development strategies and plans. It highlights some gender-population issues that impinge on rural people especially women: early age at marriage, less education, higher mortality and greater burdens of family maintenance and health care, etc. It draws attention to the costs of ign... more
