DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Director, Trade and Markets Division, EST, and the functional guidance of the ADG/Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, RLC, to provide technical advice and support in the planning and delivery of trade policy support to Member Countries in the region. Specifically to:

  • provide technical advice to the Regional Representative on trade aspects of the regional programme of work of FAO and assume full involvement in its implementation;
  • provide technical support to member countries on trade policy issues, particularly in relation to the multilateral and regional trading systems and trade negotiations relating to agriculture;
  • undertake analyses of agricultural trade policy issues for the region, including assessments of impacts of existing and proposed trade agreements on international trade in agricultural commodities and their impact on food security and the development concerns of countries in the region;
  • prepare analyses of agricultural commodities policy aspects and linkages with emerging and regional priority issues, in particular biofuels;
  • maintain liaison with and assist in the delivery of advisory technical services to Member governments and other national and regional institutions in the region on trade-related maters, projects and programmes;
  • participate and organize regional technical meetings, workshops and conferences on trade policy issues, including preparation of background documents and reporting related results;
  • perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced university degree in economics or agricultural economics which included some specialization in agricultural trade issues and analysis
  • Seven years of relevant experience in international agricultural trade and policy issues
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and English and limited knowledge of French

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance of academic qualifications
  • Extent and relevance of research and analytical experience in international agricultural trade and policy issues of concern to developing countries
  • Depth of knowledge of trade and development problems facing countries in the region
  • Written and oral communication skills on technical issues.

Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 90,417 US$ 113,366 (without dependants) and from US$ 97,095 to US$ 122,442 (with dependants)
