DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Director, Forest Products and Industries Division, and the direct supervision of the Chief, Forest Products Service (FOIP), the Forestry Officer will support the development, coordination and implementation of programmes and policies related to wood and wood fibre products, in particular:

  • promote exchange of technical knowledge and experience on wood - based products, community and small scale forest industries;
  • collect, analyse and disseminate information and data;
  • provide fundraising and resource mobilization;
  • propose technical studies and prepare technical reports on wood and wood fibre products;
  • review the technological development in the wood, pulp and paper sectors;
  • promote the utilization of wood in competition with other materials;
  • assist forestry officers on crosscutting issues like climate change, poverty alleviation, food security etc;
  • render technical support in preparation of the annual FAO Yearbook of Forest Products;
  • prepare draft materials, organize meetings and field missions related to wood-based products;
  • backstop field projects, as required;
  • develop training programmes or technology transfer for capacity building in member countries;
  • assist national forestry programmes on forest industries aspects, support capacity building;
  • perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced university degree (M.Sc or above) in Wood Technology or Forestry
  • 5 years of relevant experience related to forestry or forest industry
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Extent of experience related to forestry, wood industries, knowledge of latest trends
  • Interpersonal and team working skills
  • Extent of experience in developing countries or countries with economies in transition
  • Proved capacity to implement programmes related to wood and wood fibre products
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Communication skills, both written and oral

Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-3 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 87,783 US$ 112,967 (without dependants) and from US$ 94,043 to US$ 121,453 (with dependants)
