DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Subregional Coordinator for South America and the functional guidance of the Department of Forestry, in close collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team. More specifically to:

  • Serve as member of a multi-disciplinary team addressing technical, policy, and development issues in the forestry, agriculture, and fisheries sectors in the sub-region;
  • Serve in the multi-disciplinary team as the substantive expert on forestry, including forest and wildlife management, wildlife conservation, forest products and services, forestry knowledge and information, and forestry policies and institutions;
  • Analyse problems and appraise developments in the countries of the sub-region in the broad field of forestry,
  • Provide information and advice of a technical, policy and socio-economic nature to the governments of the sub-region and to regional and sub-regional organizations;
  • Support the development of national capacities to effectively manage, conserve and expand forest and wildlife resources and trees outside forests; and to develop policies and institutions that enhance the contribution of forests to reducing poverty and to supporting sustainable livelihoods and income;
  • Contribute to the review and implementation of forestry policies at country and sub-regional level, and work with team members on integrated agricultural and rural development issues and ensure appropriate attention to forestry issues;
  • Advise governments and sub-regional organisations in formulating and implementing national forest programmes, including linkages with other sectors and in designing programmes to reduce poverty, to protect the environment, to conserve biological diversity, to combat desertification and to mitigate the effects of climate change;
  • Provide technical backstopping for national, sub-regional and regional projects; and to contribute to region-wide periodic planning and programming exercises and other reports;
  • Organize official meetings and intersession-work, such as Regional Conferences and the Regional Forestry Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean ; organise and conduct seminars, workshops and training courses; and represent the Organisation in technical meetings, programme development or evaluation processes, or other venues as designated by senior managers;
  • Develop and facilitate the effective knowledge exchange in the sub-region including through networks, partnerships, and electronic communications; and to prepare background papers and material for publications, including studies and surveys related to the sub-region in the field of forestry;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced university degree in forestry, natural resources management, or a related field
  • Seven years of relevant experience in forest management and conservation
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and English

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Extent of knowledge of forestry concepts, policies, and issues
  • Knowledge of development and conservation issues in the sub-region
  • Ability to develop and implement plans and programmes
  • Ability to work effectively in inter-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop practical recommendations
  • Communication skills, both oral and written

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 90,417 US$ 113,366 (without dependants) and from US$ 97,095 to US$ 122,442 (with dependants)
