DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general supervision of the Director, Forestry Economics and Policy Division (FOE), and the direct supervision of the Chief, Forest Policy Service (FOEP), to plan and implement programmes, which promote participatory approaches in forestry. Specifically to: - plan, develop and implement activities and practical methodologies to promote participatory approaches in forest policy development and implementation, especially in the context of national forest programmes;
- support, through guidelines and workshops, capacity building of forest stakeholders and relevant institutions in participatory approaches to managing forest resources;
- provide technical support to countries on matters related to participatory approaches in forest policy development, implementation of community forestry programmes and on related socio-economic issues such as forest tenure and the role of forestry in poverty alleviation and food security, especially in relation to national poverty reduction strategies;
- provide guidance and technical support to national forest programmes on matters related to participatory and community forestry approaches;
- formulate, monitor and provide technical backstopping of field projects in the area of participatory forestry and community forestry;
- identify and develop information on emerging issues related to the participatory and community forestry in collaboration with other FAO units, other international organizations and relevant non-governmental organizations;
- develop and maintain contact with donors and contribute to resource mobilization to support the programme;
- perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
|
- Advanced university degree in forestry or social sciences or related field, including studies in community forestry, rural sociology or related subjects
- Seven years of relevant experience in international forestry development including significant work in participatory and community forestry
- Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
|
- Extent of relevant experience in participatory and community forestry and issues related to forestry and poverty alleviation
- Extent of relevant working experience in developing countries and regional/international programmes or organizations
- Ability to initiate, plan, monitor and evaluate programme activities
- Ability to analyze technical and conceptual issues, to express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
- Capacity to work in a team

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 113 494
US$ 142 301
