DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Plant Protection Service/Joint Executive Secretary of the Rotterdam Convention, and the direct supervision of the senior Technical Officer (Rotterdam Convention), the incumbent will provide technical support in the analysis, development and implementation of activities in support of the Rotterdam Convention. In particular, will:

  • Assist in the provision of policy advice and preparation of strategic documentation related to pest or pesticide management and the Rotterdam Convention at national, regional and international levels;
  • Analyze technical and policy issues relevant to pesticides management and implications for implementation of the Rotterdam Convention;
  • Assist countries in assessing needs and capacities and preparing plans and guidelines in order that they might benefit from the information on pesticides available under the Convention and from the PIC procedure;
  • Develop and maintain contacts with designated national authorities, regional and sub-regional partners in order to promote regional and subregional cooperation in the implementation of the Convention;
  • Organize and participate in technical meetings, seminars, workshops and training programmes at national, regional and international levels on implementation of the Convention;
  • Develop training material and technical documents in support of technical assistance to countries in the implementation of the Convention;
  • Undertake case studies with partners in countries on the problems associated with severely hazardous pesticide formulations as basis for development of technical and policy support to address these problems;
  • Collect, analyze, update and disseminate information on pest or pesticides management in countries;
  • Prepare background information and draft technical documents in support of the meetings of the Conference of Parties and Chemical review Committee;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University Degree in Agricultural, Biological or Chemical Science
  • Five years of relevant experience in the field of pest or pesticides management including technical and policy aspects
  • Working knowledge of two of the following: English French or Spanish

 

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance of work experience to the stated duties
  • Extent of experience in and knowledge of policy and technical issues concerning pest or pesticide management in developing countries
  • Extent of experience in developing and delivering technical projects
  • Extent of experience in organizing and coordinating technical meetings and training workshops
  • Quality of both oral and written communication skills on technical issues in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment

Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-3 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 94,072 US$ 121,060 (without dependants) and from US$ 100,780 to US$ 130,154 (with dependants)
